An infestation of crabs or lice could be a very irritating, painful and embarrassing problem. Lice can be of different types and they are classified according to the part of the body they choose to affect. You could get crabs through direct skin contact with a carrier or using his clothing or linen. Getting crabs is however not a serious problem and could be easily remedied.
Types of lice
The scientific name for head lice is Pediculus humanus capitis. When you suffer an infestation of head lice, you could face acute itching and burning. But it could be treated easily by using anti-lice shampoos. Body louse is called Pediculus humanus corporis in scientific terms. If you do not maintain personal hygiene, it could infest and lay eggs in your body.
What actually is a crab?
Pediculosis pubis is the type of lice referred to as crabs because of its shape like a miniature crab. This insect is commonly known as public lice or crab lice and is the most annoying variety since it afflicts your pelvic area and causes painful rashes. You could get crabs through some random sexual experiences with affected persons.
These lice are visible to naked eyes being 1.1–1.8 millimeters in length. They feed on your blood and slide along your public hair to the skin of the genitals. If you observe closely, you could detect their white eggs.
How to get rid of crabs?
Trimming and combing the public hair with a nit comb could shake off the lice sticking to your body. There are too many OTC topical solutions available for cleansing off crabs. However, you could be allergic to certain products as well.
Generally these topical creams contain active ingredients like permethrin, lindane, and malathion. Crab creams containing Lindane should not be used by pregnant women and children under two years.
