Basic information about cradle cap
Cradle cap is a minor problem in infants and it is not at all harmful. If the problem of cradle cap becomes severe, it simply causes an itch in the scalp without making the baby really uncomfortable due to it.
Cradle cap has got nothing to do with improper cleansing of your baby and hence, you need not become desperate to get rid of it. In most cases, cradle caps disappear naturally after the first year.
Causes of cradle cap
Doctors have yet not been able to detect the exact causes of cradle cap or seborrheic dermatitis. Some are of the opinion that it occurs in infants who absorb hormones from the mother’s body during her pregnancy. This absorption causes an excess production of sebum. Others say that the yeast malassezia causes cradle crap.
How to eliminate cradle crap?
Anti-fungal shampoos are generally effective in removing cradle cap. However, you must observe certain precautions about applying it on your baby’s tender scalp. Start by putting some baby oil on the affected areas of the scalp, at least 10-15 minutes before shampooing. This helps to release the flakes and scales sticking to the scalp and makes it easier to shampoo them off.
Mineral oil or petroleum jelly could be used as substitutes to baby oil. However, you should not do this any time other than the proposed treatment. After you wet the baby’s scalp, use a soft-bristled toothbrush on the loosened flakes.
After you are done with shampooing, gently pat dry the scalp. You might have to repeat this procedure a few times until the cradle crap fully disappears. However, if it refuses to go away and develops into red swollen patches, apply a little hydrocortisone cream. If the problem worsens and spreads, visit a doctor immediately.
