Nausea and its causes
Nausea is a strong urge to vomit, creating spasms within you without anything actually coming out. It could turn into a debilitating problem. There could be several factors causing nausea. Food poisoning, traveling or flying, specific medicines, excessive alcohol and some serious diseases like gallstones, peptic ulcers, headaches, and gastroenteritis bring on nausea.
Sometimes, undertaking certain therapies like radiation for treatment of cancer, hormonal fluctuations owing to thyroid, pregnancy or use of contraceptives, presence of toxins like nicotine, antibiotics or alcohol in your body and critical organ failures like those of liver, pancreas and kidney also result in nausea.
How to deal with nausea
If you feel frequently nauseated, you must consult a doctor immediately. In case it is just a temporary discomfort, take OTC anti-nausea medicines like Bonine or Dramamine. However, these drugs could cause drowsiness. So, you must treat the problem internally instead of taking too many medicines.
You can keep down nausea by taking liquids like water, tea, soft drinks, ginger ale ad sports drinks in ample amounts. However, stay away from caffeinated products and juices of citrus fruits as the acid can worsen the problem. Chew some crackers, suck popsicles, peppermints or ice chips.
Some precautions about food during nausea
If you have throw up once or twice and still feel queasy, avoid taking solid foods for at least six hours. Avoid junk and spicy foods at all costs. Stick to a bland diet until the situation improves and then switch to fruits and cereal. Sometimes nausea could be due to motion sickness or excessive movement. You could ease this by lying down in a comfortable posture and taking rest until the feeling subsides.
However, if your nausea refuses to go away even after the second week, turns bloody or cloudy and is accompanied by body aches and headaches, visit your doctor now.
