Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are an abnormal swelling and bleeding of the veins in the rectal and anal areas. Explained in further details, piles are a cushion like formation of tissue masses within your anal passage, which slip downwards due to lack of support and protrude, creating complications. Since these tissues are fed with a dense network of arteries, the blood vessels become bloated with blood.
Various causes of piles
Piles is a common health problem generally experienced at the older stage of life and you may find it too embarrassing to share. Hence, it is important to know the factors that cause piles to avoid them. Spending long hours in the toilet, straining during bowel movements, continuously standing or sitting for long periods, lifting heavy loads, pregnancy, childbirth, severe coughing or sneezing and lack o fiber in your food could cause piles.
Classifying piles
Depending on their position and occurrence, piles are classified into external and internal types. External piles are visible directly outside the anus or rectum. But internal piles are formed inside the anal canal and cannot be seen from outside.
While external piles could cause pain while sitting and become extremely itchy, internal piles are painless but start bleeding during bowel movements. If external piles are left untreated, they could turn into thrombosed piles, or a strangulated mass of inflamed veins, which is far more difficult to handle.
Prevention for piles
You must take a healthy diet rich in fibers and plenty of fluids, to ensure smooth bowel movements. After visiting the toilet, you must clean the anal area thoroughly with a most tissue to remove all traces of feces that cause irritation. You could also take Sitz baths from time to time. After soaking yourself in a tub of warm water for 15 minutes, apply an ice pack to your bottom to improve blood circulation.
