How to get rid of Sore Throats?

Sore throats are commonly associated with cold and flu and go away on their own. But when the problem persists for a period longer than a week or keeps recurring at regular intervals, it could be a pointer to a grave health condition and should not be left to be healed on its own. You must visit a doctor if the sore throat is accompanied by stiff neck.

Ailments associated with sore throat

Sore throats accompanied by fevers, fatigues, headaches and muscle pain could be a symptom for strep throat, bacterial infection in the throat and even tonsillitis. If you are a heavy or chain smoker or are allergic to common pollutants, you have greater chances of getting chronic sore throats.

Sometimes sore throats also result from taking nasal drops for treating a common cold or flu. By suppressing the coughs, the nasal drops complicate the problem. Instead of getting rid of the fluid filling up your lungs, it builds up inside the nose linings and creates irritating problems like sore throat.

Common remedies for sore throats

You can reduce the discomfort of sore throats by drinking ample amounts of water to which you have added ginger and lemon juice. While the water hydrates your system, the acidic lemon removes mucus and ginger protects the throat lining from the damages of sore throats. You could also take warm beverages like lemon tea or coffee to feel better.

Gargling with warm salt water for 30 minutes can give much relief from fits of coughing. Taking a hot shower also helps cure irritation. Using a steam vaporizer and putting up a humidifier in your room work very well. You should avoid too much sweet dishes, since sugar can irritate the throat.

Medicines for sore throat

Common OTC solutions for sore throats are Acetaminophen, NSAIDs and Ibuprofen. You should take antibiotics with caution and avoid cough drops altogether.
