Staph infection, also known as Impetigo is very contagious and spreads quickly as a form of contact dermatitis in public places. It is generally caused by the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. However, staph infections could be manifest in various forms such as Boils, Folliculitis, Stomach Flu, Arthritis and Carbuncles.
Causes and symptoms of staph infections
Staph infections of the skin generally results from excessive use of antibacterial soaps and cosmetics, which kill the helpful bacteria in your skin and make it prone to infections. Such infections are identified by symptoms such as itching, redness, sores and appearance of yellow or gray scabs on the skin.
The boils, carbuncles and folliculitis generally appear on your face, neck, back and head. These cases develop when the infection has spread too far. At this stage it could even affect the brain and spinal cord and you must consult a doctor.
How to prevent staph infections?
The best way to avoid staph infections is maintaining general hygiene and cleanliness especially in public places like schools, gyms and hospitals where you come in contact with other people. Avoid coming in direct physical touch with people suffering from skin infections. Do not use or share the things of personal use like clothes, towels, soaps etc.
Treatment for staph infections
If you are infected with staph bacteria and facing the outbreak of boils, folliculitis and carbuncles, you must take particular care of your skin. Wash the affected area with warm water and soap regularly several times in a day.
You may have to dress the wounds caused from festered boils with a clean and loose piece of cotton gauge. Soak the boils in vinegar, alcohol and apply warm compresses to soothe the sores. You could put some antibiotic topical cream like Neosporin to prevent the infection from spreading.
