How to get rid of Stomach Flu?

Identifying stomach flu by its symptoms

An attack of stomach flu or gastroenteritis entails severe bouts of diarrhea, accompanied by abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, chills and cold sweats. Although these symptoms resemble those of food poisoning, stomach flu is an entirely different health condition. However, in order to make sure that the symptoms you are experiencing are from stomach flu and not worms, visit a doctor and take his expert opinion.

Preventive measures for stomach flu

More than taking medicines, you need to pay greater attention to dehydration caused by diarrhea in stomach flu. You need to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water and other healthy fluids like juices, soup and broth every day to alleviate dehydration. However, taking tea, coffee, alcohol and aerated drinks can only worsen your condition.

Stick to a bland diet consisting of white bread, potatoes, porridge, white rice and fruits like apple and banana. Eliminate citrus fruits, junks and dairy products from your diet. At the same time you require plenty of rest to recoup from the weakness and stomach pain caused due to stomach flu.

What medicines to take for stomach flu?   

If the stomachache is too much, you could consider taking mild painkillers like Excedrin, Tylenol or Oxycodone. However, it would be unwise to try self-medication with antibiotics. These often do more harm than good by killing the helpful bacvteria in your gut. Take only prescription medicines if the abdominal pain worsens and you observe blood in your vomit.

You must also make an effort to preserve the electrolytes in your body that are drained out through vomiting and diarrhea. The electrolytes are responsible for providing energy to your body. Dissolving a considerable amount of Gatorade in the water you are taking could help you recover fast and fight fatigue caused by improper eating.
