Thrush and its causes
An excessive growth of fungus could cause Thrush, which is a very common type of yeast infection. Thrush infections could appear in any part of your body, including your digestive tract, genitals and mouth. It is caused by the Candida albicans yeast or fungus that affects infants and adults alike.
Thrush could be result from a number of physical and mental factors like pregnancy, diabetes, stress, weak immunity, prolonged intake of contraceptives or antibiotics, wearing clothes that cause profuse sweating, using harsh detergents and soaps and through sexual contact with an infected person.
Symptoms of thrush infection
If you have got a thrush infection, you are likely to experience symptoms like excessive itching, redness, rashes, white patches inside the mouth, pain, swelling of the vulva, unpleasant discharges and smells from the genitals and burning during urinating and sexual intercourse. Depending on how severe the infection is, the symptoms could last from a few days to a few years.
Treatment options for thrush
If the problem is not too bad, you can get relief from thrush by applying a topical antifungal ointment. Minor thrush infections could also be cured by an application of yogurt or apple cider vinegar in the affected zone.
However, at its chronic level thrush requires a more internal approach to be properly cured. This would require you to make modifications in your diet by eliminating high sugar and carbohydrate food items.
The common OTC remedies for bad cases of thrush infections include Nystatin that should be taken at a dose of 0.5 ml four times a day. The dosage could be increased depending on the age of the thrush victim.
If the treatment is continued for 7 to 10 days, you would observe a significant improvement. Fluconazole and nystatin oral suspension are some other optional drugs for getting rid of thrush.
